2013 Maple Leaf Forever 1 kilogram coin in hand

The Royal Canadian Mint recently released this 102.1 mm diameter Fine Silver coin with selective gold plating featuring my illustration of two maple leaves. On the left is a Douglas Maple leaf and on the right a Sugar Maple leaf. This is the largest coin I’ve designed so far. Click here for full specs at the Mint’s website.

The good folks at Colonial Acres Coins kindly allowed me to come in and have a look at this coin, as well as take a few photos (and they lent a hand in the process). Priced at over CAD$2,000, I’m sad to say this coin did not come home with me. 😦

Gorgeous! Love the contrast between the black, silver and gold…

    Thank you, Karen and Holly!
The coin does look black in the photos, but it’s actually silver; it’s hard to take a photo of something so reflective. Check out the link to the Mint’s website to see their image of the coin.

    Nice image!
Curious about what was the time frame between when they picked your design, and the actual minted production pieces.
Do you know how many will be produced of that coin? I am sure it will be quite limited for a coin of that value and size.
Is the ED on the coin next to the image represent your initials?

Thanks Brad. Yes, the initials are mine. The Mint made 600 of these kilo coins. The amount of time between when the Mint chooses a design and when they release a coin can vary quite a bit. For this one, I think it was around 9 months or so.

I was at the Ottawa mint 3 weeks ago for a tour. It was impressive, though it also was smaller than I had imagined. They produce many more coin designs than I expected.
Congrats on your image being chosen.
